As a parent I always have a dilemma at home with my kids that don’t want to speak in Spanish with their parents; I always encourage them to do it because will increase their Spanish vocabulary for the reason that at school always English is the language of communication.
My kids for instance came to this country before entering first grade, even though they were so young their primary language was Spanish; as they grew up their Spanish vocabulary was decreasing and his English vocabulary was increasing therefore almost in every phrase during our conversations they will insert English words into and Spanish sentence because the lack of knowledge in that particular word.
All the time I insist to a point to be annoying to sharpen their bilingual skills due to the fact that later in a search for a job it will open up a wider selection of employers. Also is part of their heritage.
I agree 100% that the language of communication in this country is English, it is how you do business and communicate with others. That is way I wrote this article in English even though I was tented to do it in Spanish, but as you see my blog started in Spanish and now is almost English but don’t get me wrong once in a while I will do it in my native language.
In summary it does not make a difference what native language you are bringing to this country parents should encourage their children to continue speaking and learning the language of their parents even if they were born in this country. It is a skill and a cultural value.
